Self-help books
The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Louise L. Hay
Published in 1984, this self-help book is one of the first of its kind. Louise Hay shares her healing journey from cancer and also describes the relationship between body and mind – a whole new perspective on how to approach healing.
This personal development book – my very first – had an important impact on the way I see life. It allowed me to discover affirmations, the power of the mind as well as the fact that almost anything can be healed.
“You have the power to heal your life, and you need to know that. We think so often that we are helpless, but we’re not. We always have the power of our minds…Claim and consciously use your power.” – Louise L. Hay
The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle
In his classic among personal development books, Eckhart Tolle starts by sharing his striking personal experience of spiritual awakening. His message is as simple as powerful: Only the present moment counts. The author teaches us how to live in the now and deal with resistance as well as the importance of mindfulness practice.
This book was a real game changer for me. The realization that life is just a succession of present moments came as a whole new perspective for me when I read this book a few years ago. A book to be read and re-read.
“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” – Eckhart Tolle
The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
In my opinion, it’s a great book to get familiarized with the law of attraction and the co-creation of your life.
“You feel good not because the world is right, but your world is right because you feel good.” – Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero
If you are looking for a motivational and humorous self-help book then stop searching. You are a badass is a fun and inspiring guide that will help you get rid of self-sabotaging beliefs and follow your dreams. The book is illustrated with anecdotes from the author’s personal life, stories from her coaching clients, and exercises.
I particularly enjoyed the fun and entertaining way success coach Jen Sincero gets her powerful message across. I warmly recommend the audiobook read by the author.
“If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.” – Jen Sincero
When I Say No, I Feel Guilty: How to Cope, Using the Skills of Systematic Assertive Therapy by Manuel J. Smith
This book is for you if you struggle to assert yourself and say no to others. It’s packed with examples, anecdotes, exercises, and techniques to help you say no without feeling guilty and set healthy boundaries in relationships.
For years, I have been struggling to say no to people around me. I found this book particularly helpful to learn assertiveness. The techniques and the examples can be easily adapted to everyday situations.
“Each of us is ultimately responsible for our own psychological well-being, happiness, and success in life. As much as we might wish good things for one another, we really do not have the ability to create mental stability, well-being, or happiness for someone else.” – Manuel J. Smith
Novels
Dying to Be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing by Anita Moorjani
In her enthralling autobiography, Anita Moorjani relates how she lived a near-death experience after her organs failed due to the devastating cancer she had been fighting for years. After this experience, she very quickly recovered and completely changed her lifestyle.
If like me, you enjoy reading inspirational autobiographies, then this book is for you. The author shares her childhood memories in a multicultural environment, the challenges she faced in her adult life and, most importantly, her healing journey.
“Everything that seemingly happens externally is occurring in order to trigger something within us, to expand us and take us back to who we truly are.” -Anita Moorjani
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
This well-known book tells the story of Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd who has a recurring dream about a treasure. He decides to travel to the Egypt desert in the hope of finding his treasure buried at the foot of the Pyramids. What starts out to be a journey to find material wealth turns out to be a quest to discover the treasure within.
Apart from the mesmerizing atmosphere, what I like in this novel is the combination of a simple story, a powerful message as well as little wisdoms spread throughout the book.
“One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.” -Paulo Coelho
Reading self-help books is a key element in our self-development journey. It’s inspiring, gives us new ideas and perspectives, and motivates us to grow. I hope this list of inspirational personal development books will help you in your quest.
